LaMotte Sandstone provides a moist substrate for moss, ferns, and lichens in Hickory Canyon in the Missouri Ozarks of Ste. Genevieve County. It is the first sedimentary rock in the Missouri Geological Column. It derives is sand from the hard igneous rocks and granite of the St. Francois Mountains.

It is incredible to think that the water level was originally 75 meters lower than this prior to the construction of the Three Gorges Dam! This is one of the key sites where many ancient buildings and artifacts had to be relocated to higher ground (or rebuilt or lost), along with a large part of the local population before the gorges were flooded.
