Mountains

LaMotte Sandstone provides a moist substrate for moss, ferns, and lichens in Hickory Canyon in the Missouri Ozarks of Ste. Genevieve County. It is the first sedimentary rock in the Missouri Geological Column. It derives is sand from the hard igneous rocks and granite of the St. Francois Mountains.

A friend and I visited Spada Lake a couple of times this spring before the snow had completely melted out. We ended up parking near the gate and walking almost all the way around the lake to reach this point. We were there primarily to capture footage for use in a documentary, so we were mainly looking at the clear cuts around this area, but since the weather was calm the reflections of the trees and mountains made for a great fine art image.

The iconic entry to the first gorge of the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River. This scene is most famously depicted on the back of the Chinese 10 RMB note. It is incredible to think that the water level was originally 75 meters lower than this prior to the construction of the Three Gorges Dam! This is one of the key sites where many ancient buildings and artifacts had to be relocated to higher ground (or rebuilt or lost), along with a large part of the local population before the gorges were flooded.
