The American Bottom is that great Mississippi River Floodplain that extends from the mouth of the Missouri River a hundred miles south to the mouth of the Kaskaskia River on the Illinois side of the big river. On August 31, 1993 the levee protecting the floodplain broke near Columbia, Illinois and inundated an major portion of the bottoms, including Herbert Mueller's farm and cypress grove. He planted the grove in an area of his farm he could not dry out.
